It's a big change from 20-25 years ago. My mom was a social worker in Clermont and Adams counties in the 90s so these home prices would blow her mind.
kerstanley.bsky.social
That used to be the case with Clermont County re:275 but there are brand-new suburban sprawl subdivisions popping up all the way out to Mt.Orab and incomes are on par with the rest of the Cincinnati MSA suburbs.
kerstanley.bsky.social
Sadly, this child poverty map is close to a proxy for Appalachia, and likewise indicates that Clermont and Warren counties are now middle class suburbs.
kerstanley.bsky.social
It looks like this map has Portsmouth, Ohio as the western start of Appalachia and I think that's actually pretty accurate for 2025 because the eastern suburbs of Cincinnati have sprawled well into the area west of Portsmouth.

I wish Kaiser existed in more than like 4 states. I’d be willing to pay up to 50% more than I do currently for health insurance if I could get a Kaiser plan and never again have to do an hour of research to find an in-network doctor.

All but one of my employers in California offered a stipend for an Obamacare/Covered CA plan in lieu of an employer-based plan. I’m curious how common that has become.

Actually yes, my kid is safer in NYC where the car crash death rate is less than half of the rest of the state.

But also, research shows that suburban kids are much more likely to abuse substances, have anxiety, and exhibit delinquency than their urban peers.

I’ve been saying this. LeBron for governor, Joe Burrow for senator eventually. It’s the only way that Ohio will ever go blue again in my lifetime.

i think an interesting cultural experiment would be if we started enforcing traffic law

Skip the Oscar performance and just admit that you personally like to speed.

The excuses that electeds came up with to oppose that bill were so wild. One said they couldn’t support bc it would hurt the working class, because it could increase the cost of vehicles.

At the rate our electric rates are rising, it wouldn't take much to push gas costs per mile, for most popular vehicle, lower than EV.

And if you select an efficient car, use the cheapest rates that exist, it's already cheaper to use gas.

Not good.

I was just giving an example, though there actually are ways to design bulb outs for bikes.
kerstanley.bsky.social
The “they” you are referring to was a huge coalition of street safety advocates who fought to pass the bill that created this speed camera program. The idea is for the cameras to become obsolete over time as the camera revenue funds safety projects.

The camera program funds street calming
kerstanley.bsky.social
California’s speed camera program mandates that all camera revenue goes towards safety improvements (like bulb outs) at the location of the camera. So it’s not really accurate to say there are zero plans for reduced space.

I grew up with several kids whose parents wouldn’t allow them to go trick or treating (or read Harry Potter) because of the “satanic imagery,” and yet there’s a 99% chance those same parents voted for the person who posted *this.*

I would love to see more states pursue a speed camera program like California's AB 645 pilot, which mandates that the ticket revenue be used for infrastructure safety improvements at the location of the camera(s) so that eventually the camera becomes unnecessary/obsolete.

Every part of the city outside of the red zone still has parking requirements. Upper Manhattan! Most of Brooklyn! The entirety of the Bronx!

Add Newport News, VA to the list of cities that have broadly ended parking requirements before NEW YORK CITY.

This is why I have a lot of anxiety for my friends and family still living in my red home state. It's getting to the point where they legitimately have fewer rights than I do in a blue state.
