Writer. Still working out what I want to be when I grow up.

I wear a lot of different hats. Some of them even fit me. You may know me from software, startups, books, plays, or music. I do too much.

So far on this evening's Avanti West Coast train service I have witnessed 8 police officers run down the carriage to arrest someone, while a fellow passenger tried to give sports-style live commentary.

All human life is here on the 18:30 to Glasgow Central, and it’s getting weirder by the minute.

Such a blast in London recording & mixing the audio book for my next novel. Can't wait for the world to meet The Boy From Elsewhere next February!

So far on this evening's Avanti West Coast train service I have witnessed a little girl snatch a sandwich out of a stranger's hand, and a man repeatedly kiss a dog on the mouth.

All human life is here on the 17:30 to London Euston, and we're only a third of the way through the journey.

The Eurostar website feels like it needs an 'under construction' GIF.

It is now December 1st (UTC) and, now for the fifteenth year, I have just watched www.canitalkaboutchristmasyet.com tick over to say YES.

I shall celebrate tomorrow with my first mince pie of the season.

The dot com bubble wasn’t about useless companies making no money. It was about an over-investment in infrastructure vs need, and a whole bunch of over-prediction on asset depreciation.

It's the launch in Battersea on Monday and I would love to see you there. Tickets are free and the event will be hosted by Bob Hughes from @switchboard.bsky.social

People will stick with Bluesky because leaving twitter was exhausting and they won’t do it twice. Not because it’s doing things better.

I moved to Scotland just over two months ago and I am finally giving in and ordering a Munchy Box.

Please hold me in your thoughts as I attempt to traverse this new cultural landscape with dignity and courage.

Today is Trans Day of Remembrance.

Annually we observe this day to remember the lives lost to violence and transphobia in the last year.

Hug your trans+ friends and family today. And to my trans siblings: remember that just existing is an act of resistance, love, and radical self care.

I felt a great disturbance in the network. As if millions of websites cried out to their CDN and were suddenly silenced.

I fear something terrible has happned.

Wrote a little piece for QX Magazine about looking for a mirror in society as a queer kid - and creating them for the next generation now that I'm a queer adult. #TransAwarenessWeek

Navigating the streets of Bedford early on a Monday morning is a bit like being in The Crystal Maze only, instead of Richard O’Brien, I’m being chased around by an angry old drunk guy.

Wait.

That IS Richard O’Brien!

Today is my name day!

I often get asked "Is Kestral your real name" and yes, it is, but I did get to choose it myself. Turns out you can just… pick your own name!

So why choose this name?

Airports, especially older airports, are interesting creatures. They really show the scars of their evolution - from spartain airfield roots through the era of air travel luxury, arriving broken and bent at today's era of quiet yet nessecary shame.

I can't use my kettle because its base station checks in with an AWS server to ascertain whether the boiling temperature of water has changed before each cycle.

Opened Steam for the first time in ages and it has recommended me a game called "Bunkered With Femboy".

I don't know how to tell Steam that I'm a millennial and therefore have no idea what some of these newfangled terms are.

Like seriously, what even is a "bunker" anyway?

Bluesky allows fascists but doesn't allow a frequently asked questions hashtag. This is the danger of automoderation in place of actual policy and real humans.
October 19, 2025 at 10:32 AM
I really can't make up my mind about Bluesky.

I tolerated fascists and awful policies for a long time on Twitter before one-too-many bad experiences forced my hand. I LOVE the amazing community I have over on the fediverse, but Bluesky has so many of the people I miss post-Twitter.
