right. i think fascists are definitely out there and definitely form a part of the basis of his support. but it's just not a useful way of characterizing the movement as it exists. it gets in the way of understanding how it operates, leads to people making bad predictions, etc.

in my mind, the mass movement that undergirds trumpism looks more like the semi-spontaneous collectivities that are organized around open source software. it relies on mobilizing and exploiting fan labor in the same ways. when people talk about politics as fandom, they don't go far enough.
November 22, 2025 at 12:26 AM
this is why it's hard to talk to liberals about this, because there's an assumption that political organization doesn't matter or is autopoetic. but it's the political organization, not its ideology alone, that made fascism uniquely dangerous.
November 22, 2025 at 12:12 AM
this is still ideology, though. i am talking about the concrete ways the movement organizes itself. there's basically no organization. there are no party structures. there's been no attempt to build them.
November 22, 2025 at 12:07 AM
i really do not think this is a trivial distinction, it's what distinguishes fascism from every other right-wing nationalist formation. the problem is that people have an insufficiently negative view of those other forms and think calling it by a more appropriate name is discounting the danger.
November 22, 2025 at 12:00 AM
i still do not think it is. not because it isn't *bad*, but because it completely lacks the political organization and party structures of that every fascist movement actually has. but if you do believe it is fascism, you better be organizing your neighbors and getting ready for street fights.

truly. if they meant it, they'd be acting completely differently.

i'm not a big "everything is eugenics" guy, but the ideology of meritocracy is so deeply entangled with the methods and hyper-ordinal worldview of eugenics that it ought to give more people pause.
