I would definitely get a press copy of the book, not read it cover to cover, read parts of it as relevant to stories I'd work on and cite those.

The difference seems pretty obvious. In the former, this was a powerful lobby pushing back on individual users with huge penalties to try to deter piracy, whereas now AI companies that have gargantuan investments and are carrying the US economy seem to be able to just steal IP and keep going.

I want an internet IP lawyer to flesh this out better than I could (and let me know if you know where one has), but I kinda can't get over how the IP industries steamrolled tech in the late 90s and early aughts and now tech is steamrolling the IP industries.

I'm in awe of his output. Even if I could fit all those ideas into a novel, which I can't, it would take me a decade. And he's putting out multiple books a year.

A PSA if you are into nerdy first contact sci fi novels, as I am: @aptshadow.bsky.social's latest, Shroud, is very fun and good.

This kind of news outlet push alert hits different when you work at that news outlet.

Not an expert on this stuff but I have the sense that no one backing Weiss understands that what she has done her whole career, opinion-based news-flavored content, is distinct from news reporting.

Bari Weiss introduced herself to CBS News staff today on the network's 9AM call, saying she wants to "win," which requires restoring trust to CBS. She also said she was excited for staff to get to know the Free Press, and ended her remarks by saying: "Let's do the fucking news."

I’m seeing a lot of people misunderstanding Duffy here. Essential Air Service is a specific program started in the 1970s to subsidize flights to smaller regional airports that carriers wouldn’t otherwise fly to. It doesn’t mean air traffic control for the whole country will stop running.

Sean Duffy says the safety of the air traffic control system will start being impacted next Sunday if the shutdown continues

I eagerly await the day when an OpenAI whistleblower doxes the many people in power who've secretly had ChatGPT write everything for them.

If you'd like to delight in a side-by-side comparison, here's Bari Weiss' reported note to CBS staffers (left) and the one I cooked up on ChatGPT with a quickly dashed-off prompt (right). Looking forward to hearing from you in the days and weeks ahead!

That seems to pull from the fantasy journalism started out pure and only devolved in recent years or decades, which is so ahistorical I don't know where to start.
kevincollier.bsky.social
Also, while I am not a historian of my profession, there was not a moment in the past where it suddenly sprang forth fully formed as an objective noble endeavor where we all agreed to be fair and informative.

Number nine on Bari Weiss's list of items that have defined journalism "since the beginning" appears to be that CBS needs to figure out how to start using AI in its workflow.

This list could easily be condensed to five items

this is wild: while Stephen Miller's guy was in Minnesota for his uncle's funeral, somebody was able to see his entire phone and take pictures of his Signal group chats talking about military deployments to Portland, and brought them to the Strib (gift link: www.startribune.com/trump-offici...)

I have a toddler who I go to significant lengths to keep off the internet and he loves to explore our neighborhood's residential sidewalks and I hate that those two are in such tension.

What kind of fucked up ratio is this

From Reddit, apparently Google Home users can use Gemini on their Nest cams and get daily LLM briefings on what went on in front of their house that day.

we're not scaremongering; this is really happening. (time passing, that is.)

Yesterday was the start of Cybersecurity Awareness Month. I'm sorry I forgot to say anything. You probably weren't aware of cybersecurity yesterday. Unfortunately you probably will become more familiar with it as October goes on.
