Haitians fought in the Revolutionary War for US independence. The new Haitian government gave weapons to Simon Bolivar for the independence of Gran Colombia. The Haitian Revolution inspired slave uprisings. Haitians have done more for freedom in the hemisphere than most countries.

One reason to remain skeptical about prominent anti-Trump Republicans is that they tend to propagate a diagnosis of Trumpism as a mere aberration from an otherwise noble conservative tradition. Such self-serving mythology misleads the political discussion.

People who pride themselves on a sophisticated understanding of nuance should make room for the possibility that “Born in the USA” can function as both a critique of patriotism and a patriotic anthem. Art can function on multiple levels. You don’t have to adopt a pedantic literalism.

The thing is, once somebody proposes restricting the freedom of women to travel from one state to another, we actually don’t have to care about their ideas about marginal tax brackets or international trade or whatever
