I suspect the issues described are fixed in the latest daily builds of RStudio, available at dailies.rstudio.com/rstudio/cucu.... We're hoping to prepare a patch release from this branch within the next couple of weeks.

I can't stop myself from bundling various fixes to other, unrelated issues in my PRs. I start working on a bug fix, find other bugs along the way, and then fix them all together as I go. And suddenly the resulting PR is a confusing mess because of all the unrelated changes.
