I think Spotify only counts an album play if you selected an album from its interface and hit play. I tend to use long playlists which would contain entire albums, hence why Last.fm shows me a different set of albums.

I think Spotify thinks that the same song from different albums are different plays, hence why "Surf's Up" is #1 for me on Last.fm (from both albums "The Smile Sessions" and "Surf's Up")
