Namibian diary day two
Recovery begins Wow, despite a fairly decent night's sleep, the recovery process (from the flights, the drive, and the general emotional and dizzying desolation and scale of the Namib desert) is proceeding slowly. Nevertheless, a routine is becoming apparent: Get up, have breakfast, potter around (on the days when I'm not working), have lunch, hide from the heat of the afternoon (daily highs of 30-33 degrees C), go for a walk/E-bike ride, dinner, then it's off to the observatory to await the guests.

The drive from the airport, and arrival at the lodge Let’s short-cut the preamble, shall we …? Yes the flight was long, and cramped, and I didn’t sleep (never could sleep in moving vehicles), but I finally arrived in Windhoek, tired but excited, hot, and slightly dreading the next stage of the journey: the ‘five hour’ drive to the lodge.

Another WIP snippet from the forthcoming second volume in the 5 Cosmic Fragments series: Daiv felt a huge wave of relief when he made it out of the building and then onto the Employee Shuttle. Although a powerful feeling, it didn’t last; the relief he felt paled into insignificance when confronted by the nauseous delirium he felt by the time he got home. He had a headache so bad he felt that he must be dying, and images, scenes and visions swirled uncontrollably in a vortex around his brain, to the extent that he couldn’t follow their meaning or focus on any one of them. His head filled with a painful, high-pitched keening sound, like there were a billion mourners crying out around the graves of the victims of an unimaginable atrocity.  Daiv was in a bewildered state of total panic and cognitive collapse. He was overwhelmed by grief, fear, futility, madness, horror, guilt and anxiety. He heard a thunderous beating and clamouring at the door of his apartment, or was it at the walls, the ceiling … the floor? “Surely they must break through at any time,” he heard his inner voice say, oddly calm, whilst at the same time he heard himself screaming.  No-one came. Daiv Martel collapsed on the floor of his apartment.

Every day's a learning day. Apparently,
unlike Earth's relatively smooth gravitational field, Mars' is significantly more lumpy, because of its asymmetrical mass distribution (due to features like Olympus Mons and major volcanic/basin formations).

The Cerne Abbas Star Party 2025- … The verdict …
Well, it was great! Everyone had fun, the sky was beautifully clear on Friday night, and again after the rain on Sunday. There was even a comet! Massive, massive thanks must go to the absolute stars at the Cerne Abbas Brewery for hosting the event, and to Nick (Papa Cheese) Cheeseman for feeding everyone. Legends all! Then there were those that travelled from far and wide to enjoy the views of the night sky, the beer, the food, the music and the talks (a massive shout out to the Men of Cerne, Nick Higginbottom (whose talk I sadly missed because I was outside setting up my scope!), Geoff Kirby and, of course, co-organiser Dr Richard Miles)).
