Huge news and probably the most significant win for the UK left since Corbyn became Labour leader in 2015. A comprehensive rejection of Starmerism by the country's biggest union and Labour's largest affiliate.
🚨I am delighted to have been elected as UNISON's next General Secretary.

This is a win for ordinary UNISON members. Read my statement below:

It’s frustrating seeing journalists reporting on the Unison General Secretary election primarily in party political instead of trade union terms. Andrea Egan won promising to raise the expectations of public sector workers. That could well have a big industrial relations impact very soon.

Maybe it's just me, but I find the positive tone of posts like this infuriating. It isn't "good" news.

To limit warming to 2 (not 1.5) degrees, emissions must fall by ~8% p.a., every year, from NOW.

Fossil fuel use GROWING for ~5 more years would be an unmitigated disaster.
NEW: Global fossil fuel use will peak before 2030 – unless 'stated policies' are abandoned

Contra some terrible news coverage, IEA World Energy Outlook shows coal near peak, oil peaking by 2030 & gas by 2035 (see chart)

What's going on? 🧵 + cool charts

Once again. It is NOT the case that Starmer et al believe that moving right will actually win them more votes. The situation is that they have to move somewhere, and they rightly fear that moving left would weaken Labour First's control of the party.

When I worked in UK academia I recall hearing of a Japanese man who was baffled at how Britain had decided to run its universities like firms. “Why? Your universities are excellent and your firms are terrible.”
To repeat: "A country so stupid it actively trashes one of things it's good at and famous for."
Today's university slashing and burning is Edinburgh, where about 10% of the budget will be cut. There'll be another case every single day until UK govts actually do something. A country so stupid it actively trashes one of things it's good at and famous for.
