My niece works in a care home for the elderly. They have quite a few Somali carers there and she says they are the kindest and most compassionate people you could wish to meet.

Reform have fallen in the polls recently and the latest YouGov one shows them back where they were at the beginning of the year. Plenty more skeletons to emerge from Farage's cupboard yet, I suspect.

It never gets any easier. Our dogs are 11 and 14, and I know that horrible day may not be far off. They are my joyful walking companions and loyal friends, never 'just a dog'.

I feel exactly the same, although you express it more eloquently than I could. The more science discovers about animal sentience, the more I think we have done animals a huge disservice (and caused untold suffering) by valuing them according to how like us they are.

One of the best pop singer-songwriters this country has ever produced. Who knows how much great music her early death deprived us of.
