However, if you don't use transit, this issue is all but invisible. It's easy to go to a country like Japan, see all the trains, and assume a causal relationship between rail and useful transit when it's merely just a correlation. Service is not as visible but so much more important.

If you actually use transit in the US, you'll quickly realize 9/10 times the problem is actually a lack of service. Transit (regardless of vehicle) isn't getting people to where they need to go in a reasonable amount of time.
