So first, we gotta start digging into biochemistry, BUT, we have to treat biochemistry like the finite-state machinery that it is. And not the abstract mathematical concept, but the simple machines of physics (lever, pulley, screw, etc) to form active mechanisms like this lock:

An example of a simple mechanism that can be modeled by a state machine is a turnstile.[4][5] A turnstile, used to control access to subways and amusement park rides, is a gate with three rotating arms at waist height, one across the entryway. Initially the arms are locked, blocking the entry, preventing patrons from passing through. Depositing a coin or token in a slot on the turnstile unlocks the arms, allowing a single customer to push through. After the customer passes through, the arms are locked again until another coin is inserted.

Considered as a state machine, the turnstile has two possible states: Locked and Unlocked.[4] There are two possible inputs that affect its state: putting a coin in the slot (coin) and pushing the arm (push). In the locked state, pushing on the arm has no effect; no matter how many times the input push is given, it stays in the locked state. Putting a coin in – that is, giving the machine a coin input – shifts the state from Locked to Unlocked. In the unlocked state, putting additional coins in has no effect; that is, giving additional coin inputs does not change the state. A customer pushing through the arms gives a push input and resets the state to Locked.

The turnstile state machine can be represented by a state-transition table, showing for each possible state, the transitions between them (based upon the inputs given to the machine) and the outputs resulting from each input:

The turnstile state machine can also be represented by a directed graph called a state diagram (above). Each state is represented by a node (circle). Edges (arrows) show the transitions from one state to another. Each arrow is labeled with the input that triggers that transition. An input that doesn't cause a change of state (such as a coin input in the Unlocked state) is represented by a circular arrow returning to the original state. The arrow into the Locked node from the black dot indicates it is the initial state.

This is why I kept hammering the symbol grounding problem. All this math terminology got brought up but like…how do you actually DO any of that, c’mon. This is why I never fell for Bayes

Those are the words I needed to describe what was happening. I always wondered what the deeper aspect of it is that gets them so focused on definitions. And its because they think the best definition determines what the thing is. Explaining how a thing actually works is just incidental. Jesus christ

Fair warning, Im AuDHD. This is my special interest AND hyperfixation and I have been studying it in Academia and otherwise for the better part of the last 20 years with degrees in neurosci, CS, and microbio, working on 2ndary ed. I can do this all day (I only need like 4 hours of sleep)

Its a modular process. Unicellular organisms become multicellular by communicating (quorum sensing, endosymbiosis). Multicellular organisms communicate with other organisms to work together. Cells all the way up and down using the same processes. Thats the power of physicality

I thought I covered this. Its not limited to a single organism, because multiple organisms have the requisite material composition. They internally form the plan and then communicate to resolve ambiguities and competing goals. They understanding the meaning of anothers words like their own.

Every other conceivable definition of planning breaks down in some way at some point to involving a human being, either in action or in mind, which are inseparable in us anyway.

Planning is something organisms do. It is observed nowhere else. The only other thing you can try to argue for doing planning is by machines created by organisms. Their entire existence is still determined by organisms, they do not self-organize and build/power themselves. Its valid.

Careful, those studies arent definitive and are even in contention when revisiting some patients. The brain yearns for integration

Terms like "planning" are completely ungrounded and have no explanatory power without explaining more about humans actually do it. Otherwise, THAT is when things get circular, like you pointed out. You can endless ask "what does THAT mean" about the definitions until you break it down to the physics

That was the point of explaining the physical basis of thinking/cognition/what have you. That is where the action is, and it is so potent because of that physicality. It is a system in itself, there can't be anything outside of it directing or explaining meaning.

The words on the screen are just points of light, they have no other specific physical interactions on their own. The only place where "more" comes of them is when a human interprets. Likewise with words on paper. Its just carbon on cellulose. Nowhere do they mean things outside of a human mind.

They don't plan, because they don't understand anything. The words they spit out mean nothing to them. They spit words out because WE have formed those words and made plans in our writings on the internet. They experience nothing so they understanding nothing. Words in themselves do not have meaning

Likewise the fire department forms a plan of action because while the exact nature of the incident will be unique there will be many aspects of it that are similar to prior experiences. They know how to move their bodies and what to wear to avoid the intensity of the heat to avoid injury.

No it isn't, you can call a statistical procedure "forecasting" but if you go by the actual processes involved in human thinking to actually do it, its not. The statistics would only be an aspect, an attempt to quantify and measure more aspects of the world to improve your thinking.

Thats how grounded definitions work. You have to elaborate on the physical basis of planning, because it...involves...human thinking and cognition. Thats what planning actually is.
