Ha I like this read! And given his experience at the Battle of the Somme, I imagine it felt more straightforward to paint enemies in a more simplistic and totalizing way.

Agreed. I imagine Tolkien would have written things a little differently in the modern era in any case

Honestly the plot makes much more sense in that light than in the “nostalgia for the better blood of our ancestors” stuff that does crop up in the musings of Theoden and Denethor. Although those two are not designed to be reliable narrators at all!

…which is still very much about finding strength in unexpected places, the proud being humbled, and sacrificial love overcoming the cruel weight of power

Doing a listen with the excellent Andy Serkis-narrated audiobooks and all the stuff of blood and race is sticking out more than I remember from a couple decades ago when I last read them. I can see why it appeals to the white nationalist bros but their ethos is so at odds with the heart of the story

It’s pathetic folks like this can’t conceive of people acting bravely or generously out of care, no transactional element involved at all.

I’ve lost count of how many glossy magazine pieces I’ve seen like this. God forbid anyone else was right *too early*. “Listen to me, a brave truth teller, who is seeing the light at exactly the right time. Now….where’s my check?”

Thank you! Yes, oil on linen.

Yep, and the reason people buy it is that a ton of famous comedians and podcasters and oped columnists reinforce it constantly. These rest of us remember normies and even conservatives horrified at the manner of George Floyd’s death and businesses cancelling events in NC over the bathroom bill.

We’re with you!! Hoping our state doesn’t get a turn in the barrel too, but if it does, you all have given everyone a courageous example to follow

It’s fine! Changing rapidly and the military contingent is fairly ethnically diverse. I grew up in evangelicalism so the orgs headquartered here aren’t operating in a foreign language ha

100%. One of my close friends died of a heart condition brought on by a treatable childhood illness. Her mother was in a cult that shunned medicine. That woman should never have been allowed to abuse her daughter by withholding vaccinations and standard care.

Thank you!! Hold fast!

I initially read it as a short story too. Wasn’t until some random details and repetition that i started to wonder

People rage posting like that guy are bumming me out. Your post was helpful bc videos often don’t show the broader context (lone pedestrians being targeted, for instance).

How do you not feel like a chud making this kind of post at someone doing actual work on the ground? Please log off for a bit
January 14, 2026 at 3:30 PM
Right, and those things are related. What’s the point of any average citizen putting it all on the line if Dems will just do a couple fundraising texts and then vote for Trump’s budget in a month to avoid a shutdown? We’ve seen this video before
January 12, 2026 at 3:32 PM
Absolutely. I can’t figure out why they haven’t blocked the site in most of Europe, where countries tend to lead the way on better Internet policy. If the rest of the world were blocked from using it, it would just turn into another truth social eventually and Maga would lose interest
January 6, 2026 at 3:10 PM
Yes
January 4, 2026 at 5:35 AM
Agreed, it’s not something the Dems can meaningfully deploy although I do think they should try in order to have republicans on record. Also the downside if they succeed is Vance in power, and he’s more cunning and ruthless and ideological. Plausibly worse on a bunch of issues than Trump himself

Is that garden of the gods? (I live in Colorado Springs.) gorgeous place

I don’t hate that he’s running, the more folks like him to take up centrist oxygen in the primary, the better 😆
