The artificial distinction between implementation language and end-user language can be eliminated by implementing the language using only end-user objects and messages, making the implementation accessible for arbitrary modification by programmers. We show that three object types and five methods are sufficient to bootstrap an extensible object model and messaging semantics that are described entirely in terms of those same objects and messages. Raising the implementation to the programmers’ level lets them design and control their own implementation mechanisms in which to express concise solutions and frees the original language designer from ever having to say “I’m sorry”.

The Mouse The little rectangular object with three buttons that usually sits to the right of the keyboard is called a mouse. Move it around while watching the screen. An arrow (mouse cursor) will be moving in response to it. This is how we point to objects on the screen. Smalltalk constantly "asks" the mouse where it is. A little bit further on we will explain how you can ask the mouse the same questions.

Actors have a very limited set of things they can do, but despite this are able to perform complex computations. Actors can send and receive messages, create other actors, and have behaviors, which allow them to manipulate messages. Each actor has a mailing address, and actors can only send messages to other actors whose mailing address they already have. The only way for an actor to know another actor’s mailing address is by having it sent to them in a message. Thus, all interactions are local; there is no global state of knowledge of all mailing addresses. In addition, since actors can learn new mailing addresses as well as forget old ones, the topology of interactions in the world of actors is dynamic, as opposed to one based on physical distance or some other static attribute of the world. Moreover, actors can be sequenced such that each one conducts a small part of an overall computation, allowing the programmer to compose multiple actors into one actor. Last, actors are inherently concurrent, able to compute results in parallel independently of each other.

3.3 THE HALO Every object has a "halo" to allow you to modify it in various ways. Access the halo of any object by right clicking on the object. The tip of the arrow is the "hot spot." Clicking on a very thin line can be a bit tricky because you have to aim the arrow correctly.

The next step is to open a Viewer for the object. Right click on your object (on a Mac command or apple click) and you will see a halo of actions in the form of small colored, circular buttons surrounding our object. Click on the light blue button and the center left of your object to open a viewer

The first idea is that making a big computer program is building a larger process out of smaller ones. I suppose you could truthfully say that sculptors make large shapes from stuck- together grains of clay. But that shows what’s wrong with the bits-and-bytes approach. No sculptor ever thinks that way, nor scientist, nor programmer. An architect first thinks of shapes and forms, then walls and floors, and only last about how those will be made.4
