Cutting out the extreme low ends and controlling the sub frequencies helps a lot cause those really eat up headroom. I also put a saturator/transformer before the limiter which kinda does the same thing but through subtly clipping the audio (not so much that you can hear it)

I think generally music theory is best learned by combining it with listening, so you know what the theory is actually referring to. In terms of the numbers, it's just taking a major scale (CDEFGAB) and giving them a number
