turns out trying to install a switch modkit after only soldering three times before is a bad idea
something is shorted and it doesnt boot
i bought some wick to see if i can clean it up enough to hope its not fried, after testing a charger it reported the correct voltage too

really glad I got disenfranchised with the "buying a new phone every year" and settled with the OP7T I have now
bought it scuffed and used, loved it, dropped it, repaired it, and now its like its fresh out of the box and ready for another three years with me
