I read voraciously, write occasionally, and take a lot of photos of food and cats. Queer, married, she/her. 🇨🇦
I live in a city now and it’s been a long time since I heard frogs. From a complete stranger on the internet: thank you.

Now you have a quest for next time!!

I love historical mysteries in different time periods—the Brother Cadfael series is the source of everything I know about 12th century England & Wales, hah. Hope the Roman series is good! And I’ve got The Fire’s Stone somewhere deep in my TBR already…

I have a few authors I always look for in a used bookstore and it feels like panning for (and occasionally striking) gold.

What’s in your haul?

9. LAB RAT ONE, Andrea K. Höst (2011), reread.

10. CASZANDRA, Andrea K. Höst (2011), reread.

11. GRATUITOUS EPILOGUE, Andrea K. Höst (2011), reread.

Continuation & conclusion of Touchstone Trilogy. Still love these books, w/ all their delights & improbabilities & flaws. Just a convo w/ friends.

1) can’t we cheer on our athletes while drinking coffee instead of beer before work; and
2) who is getting out of bed at 6 am to go watch sports instead of cuddling up with laptop on their chest in bed like a normal person?? but
3) good for those who want it to get to do it, I guess!

8. STRAY, Andrea K. Höst (2011), reread.

An Australian teen stumbles through a portal to another world, where she struggles to survive before she’s rescued by…psychic space ninjas!! Diary format, wonderful voice: a fave series I reread annually. Just absolute comfort to spend time with old friends.

“I’ve reached the point at which” BUT WHAT POINT IS IT

This seems like the perfect time to enter your Baldur’s Gate 3 era. Turn-based so no quick reactions needed!

7. A CASE OF LIFE AND LIMB, Sally Smith (2025).

Eminent (& OCD) barrister Sir Gabriel Ward has 2 cases over Christmas 1901: a libel suit over a music-hall star’s disputed virtue & a series of severed limbs delivered w/ punny notes to Inner Temple. Fairly obvious mystery, not enough law, still fun.

That is really rough timing. Wishing you safe travels and solace, or at least distraction.

6. THE WOLF DEN, Elodie Harper (2022).

A newly enslaved whore in a Pompeii brothel struggles first to adjust to her circumstances, and then to surmount them. Appreciated the slow pace and focus on the everyday lives—small joys, real suffering. Not a fan of the prose.

Happy birthday!!

I was astonished at the depth of grief when we lost Lynx. But it's the friend who was there for you every single day, who slept on your pillow, who greeted you at the door, who kept you company at meals and while reading books and doing hobbies and-- Everything. For 11 years. I'm so, so sorry.

Hoping all goes well AND you get an absolutely enormous bag of your chosen snack at maybe a slightly more reasonable price point. 😂

I’m so, so sorry, Maureen.

Sending good energy for you & Wimsey (from me & my own older FIV+ semi-toothless cat!)

5. RIDER AT THE GATE, CJ Cherryh (1995).

In the wintery backcountry of Finisterre, danger comes from the weather & the telepathic, predatory wildlife. At least nighthorses are obsessed enough w/ human minds (& bacon) to partner with riders—but when a nighthorse goes rogue, madness & death follow.

As I staggered to my feet, fending off the horrified well-wishes of the ladies behind me with a few self-deprecating jokes, I thought to myself, “Walk it off. IF YOU CAN.” And I could!! So, aside from a slight swelling & tenderness, all appears to be well.

Also I wiped out on the ice today but did not shatter my kneecap (unlike Aubrey’s poor coworker several weeks ago) AND THEN I saw a neighbour trying to carry an extremely heavy box down an icy laneway & paused to help her with it. Positive contributions towards the sum total of good in the world!

Last time we did this drive, we stayed overnight in Montreal (but stay for a day or three if you’ve got the time!), then stopped in Norwich VT to visit the King Arthur Baking Co. centre and shop, a mandatory pilgrimage spot for any home baker.

4. EIGHT DOORS FROM DAWN TO MIDNIGHT, Rachel Neumeier (2025).

A young woman bound to the soul of an immortal nightmare tiger & her nine-souled brother flee their enemies through the many tiers of a multilayered world. Imaginative Southeast-Asian inspired worldbuilding, gorgeous descriptions, TIGER!
