Perhaps our biggest advantage is we weren't founded by pilgrims. The obsession with religion, combined with the obsession with guns, has devastated the US. I believe most Australians believe in live and let live, but keep overt religion to yourself.

Very few of us want to travel to the US any longer. And with the disgusting display by FIFA sucking up to Trump, I will be boycotting the World Cup.

Optimism is all well and good but at the end of the day, only big companies will be able to afford these costly AI techs, which increasingly will push small innovators out. The means of innovation and the means of production will increasingly be controlled by billionaires.

Deaths from flu in 2025 exceeded deaths from Covid. Perhaps people should take flu more seriously. The tendency to call a cold "flu" is one of the factors that serves to undermine just how serious respiratory illnesses like flu and Covid actually are.

I wonder if fear of this law will increase the number of women who choose sterilization. Maybe if enough women do and the population crashes it might be a wake-up call.

Exactly. It's really not uncommon elsewhere in the world. Here in Australia our Labor Party has left and right factions. They manage to work around those differences. Uniformity of thought is tantamount to autocracy.

It's pretty clear that if the Senate shifts to the Democrats after the mid-terms, Fetterman will cross the floor and become a Republican. He needs to the primaried before that happens.

So, next will it be gay people, then Muslims, then people of colour generally, then all women, then Jewish people, untill all that's left are white male Christians. Then we can start going through which in that community should be thrown to the lions first.

A post-truth world will mean total societal collapse, and I can't think even the oligarchs will be happy with that as there goes their money. We depend on a truth-based social order for social stability, economic prosperity and innovation.

Labor needs to work with the Greens, as a very large percentage of its voters want (by way of preference voting). They're in power thanks in large part to preference voting from Greens voters like me.

Bush was an awful president, but he never sunk to these depths. Trump will be remembered in the same way Hitler and Stalin are, or perhaps more like Mussolini
