I know I should be posting about other things here than just what I've written lately. Maybe when I gain a bit more mental capacity. (When my kids are grown??) In the meantime, I listened to the new Jason Isbell disc and have some ...thoughts. open.substack.com/pub/digupthe...

Rose Cousins Honors Love in All Its Forms on 'Conditions of Love - Vol. 1' - The Bluegrass Situation
One day, as a favor for a friend who was building a recording studio, Rose Cousins wandered through a piano showroom. She had no intention of buying anything for herself, but then she came upon a 1967...

Happy birthday to Mrs. Rosa Parks. A true hero who did one legendary thing and a zillion things that have been glossed over but were no less vital to the movement for racial equity in the US. 'The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks' is a highly recommended read today and every day.

My Substack, Dig Up the Roots, is officially live. Where did I begin? With "folk process" (and WICKED) of course.

The daily battle: I desperately need to finish this writing but I also desperately need for there to not be crumbs all over the floor. How do I proceed without throwing the robovac against the wall?

(LOLz only while typing that, did it occur to me I could just take ten min and sweep. As you were.)

If you listened to ep of Folk Debate Club where I talked about the necessity of criticism & how destructive that many editors are asking for “good vibes only” “reviews,” & how that’s resulted in us not knowing how to hate something w civility … this guy nails it. (Pretty sure I’ll love Wicked tho!)

The four-year-old: “Mama, please put on Santa Tummy.”
Me: “Santa Tummy? I’ve never heard that song before.”
“No, it’s not a song. It’s a podcast.”

It absolutely is not.
Does anyone know what he’s talking about?

I say that, of course, knowing I still have music journo stuff to do (and stories I’m eyeing in that realm). But damn if it’s not nice to disappear for a few into parallel dimensions and the chellenge of a slant-rhyme metaphor.

I’ve been writing poetry and a weirdass fantasy short story since the election. And doing all the errands. This might be my new way forward?

Working on Best of 2024 music things. A good time to remember that music is a lifeline. How studies show that people who sing together can begin to synchronize heartbeats. That harmony is the musical statement that we can all have different priorities and still make something beautiful.

In that fun in-between where I can’t decide whether to go all in on rewriting the back 1/3 of my WIP or start a new project and come back to this one … idk. In 2024?
