A letter from Austen to her sister, 1807? I don't have my books with me to get the exact date. She's discussing a little girl who visited them, Kitty Foote, who was very chattery and nice and not shy. Then Austen muses about changing manners and sicknesses. I wonder if that's polio coming in.

On this day in 1956 Albert Sabin announced an oral polio vaccine, which surpassed Jonas Salk's vaccine in making polio a thing of the past for millions around the world.

Polio afflicted FDR, Mitch McConnell, Robert Redford, and many others.

This doesn't bother me much more than movies with actors playing Austen. It's a poppet, a simulacrum. It's the Holodeck imagining a living Shakespeare: A moving image of a flat caricature of a full human who exists now only in our hearts and imaginations. What do you think? I do love the smile.

it is my most deeply held belief as a copy editor that if you write a sentence that plays with the opening line of pride and prejudice you must use the jane austen commas. (it does not escape my notice that i used no commas here, but i was not attempting to emulate that sentence.)
