And one more thing - tell me if you're bringing me something as an exclusive or are giving it to other reporters as well. I'm generally only interested in exclusives. It's not a good use of my time to publish a story that one or six other reporters are also publishing.

Finally, be clear in your communication. Think through what you want to say before reaching out. It's not unusual for someone to contact me and I have no idea what they're trying to say because the communication is convoluted or is missing context or is otherwise unclear.

And know what the journo does/doesn't cover before contacting them. I, for example, don't cover products/services. And I only cover companies when they've done something wrong or there's a compelling reason to cover them. Read my work before contacting me to know what I cover.

Any time around holidays, big cyber conferences or big breaking news are poor times to contact a journo if it's about something unrelated to the con or breaking news. Your communication is more likely to get missed.
