I think you'd be hard-pressed to find absolutely anyone who'd characterize our current political climate as a "near-unanimous moderate slate currently in all elected branches of government."
With the resounding return of the city's more liberal wing, City Hall will be a much more divided place come Jan. 1. Unlike the near-unanimous moderate slate currently in all elected branches of government, Wilson will face a council that is more ideologically split.

"fantasy racism" as a reframing of "scientific racism" is particularly insightful
The science backing up the idea that race can make someone a good or bad scientist or airline pilot is as solid as the logic behind "orcs can't be wizards" or "a hobbit can never become a great fighter." This vision of racial rigidity, in which people can be sorted into categories that quantity their potential, has nothing to do with genetics; it is a political creation, a descendant of the same racist pseudoscience that was prominent in Tolkien's time. In this sense, what we call "scientific racism" could be called "fantasy racism" instead, a belief that people can be reduced to quantifiable numbers, like so many fights on a character sheet.

Speaking as a former queer kid in a small town: quiet villages that seem to have not much going on are exactly where I would expect a "culture war." Wanting to come across as normal creates a norm of attacking anyone different. There is a lot of violence in these places; it's just not as obvious.
