Hagars breakdown B4 her death breaks my heart

She is 100% sure Milkman doesn’t like is her hair. She says he likes silky hair that looks like a penny which is saying he wants a white woman

It is also interesting how the first feature Milkman noticed as kids was her hair

I noticed how Susan doesnt see her family in NC bc “theyre passing too” (pg 291)

Not only are ppl are passing as white, this feeds into the hierarchy that white is superior. Susan cant even visit her fam even if she wants to

Grace and Susan = friends but their dynamic seems off

Grace = always interjects
Susan = ignores her & keeps things from her

Are they really friends?

Racism also makes us feel disconnected to our own bodies.

Milkman tried to hide the insecurity of his leg but on pg 281 “on the earth and on the place where he walked. And he did not limp”. He finally let go and became vulnerable yet grounded

Milkman had this sense of entitlement that he reflects on pg 276
In any relationship he thought he “deserves” something when he actually deserves the least.

ppl in Shalimar felt inferior when there abilities are better than his

On pg 270 we see an overview of Milkman’s diff relationships in the diff places he went. In the North “his name spelled dread and grudging respect”.

A lack of connection bc the way racism causes ppl to treat Black ppl of diff sexes or money status Ex: Milkman & his sisters

There is also this lack of connection between the ppl of Shalimar and Milkman.
They had this inferiority complex bc Milkman could just buy a new car. “the city black guy who could by a car as if it were a bottle of whisky” (pg 266) @vdotfdot.bsky.social

Milkman makes a comment about why Black ppl wanted to leave the South…🌚
Like dude I would leave 2 wdym

“Everybody wants the life of a black man” (pg 223) said by Guitar in SOS shows the weight of possession for Black Life (which is seen today 2) The act of claiming can be seen on the claim of Milkman. Every1 wants something from him

Nel’s hair always had to be hot combed & straight. It is nice to note that Nel became less enthusiastic/interested in straight hair or pulling her nose after meeting Sula

This embrace of her Black side…

Helene’s obsession w/Nel’s nose shape/the 1 obvious Black feature she has & Helene’s determination to “fix” it

“Dont you want a nice nose” (Sula, 55) What does a “nice” nose even mean? It implies that a “Black nose” is not nice.

Sulas appearance is described as plain beside the birthmark on her face. The fact that her birthmark is viewed positively w/the known fact that it will get darker shows beauty in these “imperfections”

The description of Nel’s complexion on p. 52 is very different from Helene’s description of her. This one holds unbiased truth about how the Black community views her. This can also be compared to how the conductor & the veterans treated Helene

“they were neither white nor male, and that freedom and triumph was forbidden to them” (Sula 52).

This quote blew me away when I first read it. Not only as it is relatable feeling, it holds this blatant truth that cannot be shielded

This sexualization of Black females on page 50 reminds me of this same problem presently. Especially in the music industry😬

This also highlights the expectancy for Black girls to “grow up” faster

idk bout you but reading this gave me this directed discomfort

The name “Tar Baby” being out of spite bc Johnnie= 1/2 white w/white appearance + Eva said he doesnt have blood

This is interesting bc it shows how lighter skin go through bad things w/darker skin tones. As often as the other way around but a detail Morrison includes

This comparison of houses:

Nels=“red-velvet sofa” red=associated w/lighter complexions & velvet=luxery

Sulas=“woolly house” wool=association w/Black ppl

Both likes the others house more

“I don’t talk Creole” (pg 27)

Notice how Helene says she doesn’t speak in (& neither does Nel) but she identifies the language she was just speaking… This obvious repression of her culture to not shatter her “perfect white” world

@vdotfdot.bsky.social
October 8, 2025 at 6:00 PM
Nel=scared that Helene would be custard underneath compared to the brown wool dress: This juxtaposition bwt light & dark complexions.

The wool sole purpose=hide the custard/let Helene blend in but Helene will always be “custard” underneath

@vdotfdot.bsky.social thoughts on this hidden detail on pg. 19:

Helene = light skinned & Obsessed w/Whiteness but added a deep-brown wool & 3/4 velvet dress to her protection.

Wool=comparison of Black ppls hair being this texture
Velvet=luxury & pwr in Europe

Her dress = her genetic makeup..?🤔

The reader might expect Shadrack to be shocked when he finds out that he’s black… but instead Shadrack becomes grounded

This take switchs the negative connotation of dark complexions on its head

The fact that the hospital released Shadrack w/very little is Wildddd to me, yet not surprising.

Would they do this to a lighter skinned patient if they were acting the same way?🌚

Are we ready for that convo tho?

Shadrack’s tray = seperated white rice, blood tomatoes & brown meat. This separation of color, of white, red, and brown in triangles. A shape known as for its strength & meanings of perfection & equilibrium

Helene = White to the Black Community when they called her Helen. Their own awareness that she is different… She is “better…” This obsession of Whiteness is seen later too
