It survived the 1649 purge with orders for Crown Jewels to be melted down/sold.
Bought by royal servant Clement Kynnersley 16 shillings when the regalia was being sold off. He returned it to Charles II 1661

Moment had long dreamed of.
Hardly a breeze on top, unlike one of several previous attempts to get to a viewpoint when castle out of season. Truly meant to be!

For years dreamt of overlooking site where Mary Rose was raised. Past attempts to visit Southsea Castle timed badly. Yesterday stars aligned, got my moment. Coincidentally on anniversary witnessing the warship coming up on BBC tv as a child.
