giving a clear vision of desperate holdouts and the chaos of battle. On a first read through, the series may be a bit confusing, sifting through names and history and realms, but the islands of kinetic story telling are what is pulling me through this epic. Can't wait to read-on.

Those are just some of my thoughts. Erickson has written some of the best battles and sieges I've read. From this, to the siege of Capustan in Memories of Ice, to the events regarding the Chain of Dogs in Deadhouse Gates, Malazan as a series I've not yet finished, seems unmatched in this realm...

The imagery to me is so striking.
"She had turned about, now, her back to him. She was staring at the burning city...But she was blind. Blind to what I see. The Adjunct Tavore. And a burning world"
This moment mirrors the forming of The Adjuncts army near the start of House of Chains.

The structure of the chapter itself, being so long, makes the events feel like a never ending nightmare. From approaching the wall, to the street to street combat, to the conflagration of the entire city, Erickson doesn't give you a break from the the nightmare by switching to another story thread.

I'm reading The Bonehunters by Steven Erikson. Book six in a ten book fantasy series.

My favorite in SciFi for this year would be Morningstar by Pierce Brown.

In Fantasy it would be Memories of Ice by Steven Erikson.

Of all time is hard, but I've re-listened to Jade Legacy by Fonda Lee the most of any book I've ever read, so there's that.
