So, goodbye Walliams. In the bin where he belongs. Here's hoping any future advances will now be used to promote books already on HC lists instead, although I suspect some other dodgy half-literate celebrity will be along shortly to hoover up the cash.

Dammit. And now it's got me thinking about genre again and dragging out my folders full of notes for a book on writing that I never seem to get anywhere with. Just when I got started on the next Charlie novel.

[cont] I suspect the whole thing is really about shutting out Mary Shelley (again), not to mention all the other female writers of science fiction and fantasy who worked in the 19th century and earlier. [mini rant ends]

[cont] We are all allowed to change our names if we want. Two hundred years ago my family name was spelled differently, but had the same exact meaning. These days I often use four Japanese ideograms to represent my name. Different pronunciation, exact same meaning.[cont]

Sick of 'experts' pontificating about subjects they have no understanding of. Apparently science fiction didn't exist prior to 1926 because they were all scientific romances before then. Dude, 'romance' in this context literally means 'imaginative narrative', another term for 'fiction'. [cont]

I'm delighted to announce that we've now sold over 100 sets of the new US edition of Dorothy Richardson's Pilgrimage. And I hope it's a special sign that the 100th set was purchased by none other than the superb writer Carmen Maria Machado.

Reading Pilgrimage 2026 starts in 19 days!

I should be writing, but I have spent the good weather days constructing a patio and pond and the bad weather days recovering from the exertions (and a herniated disc). I have, however, been thinking about the new book. That counts. Doesn't it?

I'm a touch bemused. No more fat troops? Was Hegseth mistaking actual service members with all those Gravy Seals in ICE who couldn't even catch a cyclist *before* he got on his bike? Or maybe in his usual alcoholic haze, he took one look at Trump?

Things that influenced or had an impact on me (no explanations) – an occasional series for when I can be bothered to think of another one. Day: whatever. (Please do not be overwhelmed by my enthusiasm for the project).

Well, The Guardian was teetering. Could have stepped back. But with that terminally stupid article they have clearly decided to become officially shit. That leaves Private Eye and they sometime struggle when it comes to Scotland and/or gender issues.

So, Trump is going to allow Putin to set foot on Alaskan soil, territory he claims as Russian. Interesting to see how this develops - or is this the territory that Russia is getting in exchange for withdrawing from its illegal occupation of Ukraine? Asking for a Ms S Palin.

Hey BlueSky, you have my picture and you're not getting my credit card details. If that's not enough, I'm out.

Someone should remind military personnel that if they break the law (domestic or international), "I was just following orders" is no defence.
