Syria has just had a revolution. As far as I'm aware, after a revolution the new government doesn't usually 'abandon' all the military assets of the former government. They are part of the country's resources and should belong to the country's new army.

This obscures the reality - that this is almost the entire military arsenal which Syria has built up over decades, just like any other country.
