🎧 What if tracking biodiversity was like mixing music?

In #RESTOREID, we use sound to study restored landscapes. Check out our latest blog by

Agree again! On p16 we highlight this limitation, which was due to a lack of sites at the 0-10 year age range in our dataset. Nevertheless it doesn't affect the overall conclusions of the study regarding spatial targeting of woodlands.

In our conclusions section we discuss the likely benefit of scrub/early woodland stages for other species
kirstyjpark.bsky.social
🌍 Bottom line: More trees help, but strategic woodland creation is key for long-term biodiversity gains.

Using agent-based and bird movement models, we found:
1. ✅ Clumped or edge-adjacent woodlands support greater bird population growth
2. ⏳ It takes decades for benefits to fully appear (so protect what we already have!)
3.💸 Cost-effectiveness depends on smart placement, not just how much is planted

Key takeaway? The past shapes the present, and smart conservation must consider both spatial spillovers and temporal legacies to succeed. 🐦🐞🌱🐁

By studying 373 species across 134 UK woodlands (from 10 to 250+ years old), we found that both historical land use and neighboring habitats shape biodiversity. And it’s not just one or the other—their interaction matters most.

🦇 Would you run an ultra-marathon for bats?

Anne Youngman was BCT's Scottish Officer for 15 years. She retired in 2017 but is still a keen supporter. She is doing a 105km run and raising funds for bats!

Such good fun and very productive...writing retreats are a great way of focussing the mind and getting stuff done. Particularly when you have lovely colleagues!

🦇 Why bats matter? Bats play an important role in many habitats around the world. All British bat species help control insects by feeding on them. In the UK, some are ‘indicator species’, because changes to these bat populations can indicate changes in the environment buff.ly/3Xnm3V3...
