The United States, with massive high-grade petroleum reserves, going after Venezuelan oil is like a guy who owns a licensed Michigan hydroponic grow with the best genetics available smoking ditch weed. It's like Prada mounting a hostile takeover of Forever 21. It's like Detox raiding Jiggly's closet

That's the College of Eloquence Bard, for talking down angry venue owners.

Maybe it's a prequel to The Pick Of Destiny.

The only trouble is there will be a blood feud over the one magic rapier that the party gets.
January 3, 2026 at 8:24 PM
I think Bard is the one class where you could get away with that. Maybe Cleric, but it wouldn't be as great.

I desperately want to run a D&D campaign where the party is just five bards and they're a traveling band.

I mean, Obama had Obama charisma but he also had field! He excited a lot of people and successfully parlayed that into organizing and fundraising! It was a whole thing!

Curtis Sliwa would suck as a Mayor but I would actually love to have him as a neighbor.
January 2, 2026 at 2:35 AM
Sliwa sucks but it's an honest, good-faith sucking. He's awful but he's honestly and transparently awful, without artifice or bad-faith. He sucks, he'll tell you that he sucks, and he'll tell media that sucks that they suck too.

Putin has *several* times tried to assassinate Zelenskyy, so I don't much care if Ukraine's intelligence and security forces do the same. Putin is not going to uphold norms, so he doesn't get the protection of norms.

1) It is bad for nation-states to assassinate each others' leaders, as it incentivizes those leaders to prioritize their own safety above the nation's interests. The international norm against doing so is a Good Thing.

Having bought (an old home) recently, I'll hazard a guess- lot sizes. We bought a 1400 ft² house on a 6000 ft² lot for a similar price as a 2000 ft² home on a 3000 ft² lot. The new homes have basically no yard, and I like to garden. We eliminated most this-decade housing based on the tiny lot sizes.

Oh my God. I blocked out Wesley Crusher. Who, like Tasha Yar, was given his best writing only after being written off the show.
December 31, 2025 at 12:40 AM
And that's a pretty good show but lots of missed opportunities.

It's the Picard/Riker/Data/sometimes Worf show for a long time.

And it's been a source of rural disregard and distaste for cities for two millennia, maybe more.

I think that for most of human history we've been seeing the transition of "food production is 99% of human labor" to "food production is 2% of human labor" and the associated loss of food production jobs.

I have a half-Fire-Genasi-half-lizardfolk barbarian in the party right now. I like it when she uses the Hungry Jaws and Reach to the Blaze in the same fight.

As a DM I actually think it's fun negotiating with a player over which pieces of their background they can integrate into the new character.

If you ever get the chance, cross the equator for such a trip some time. I'm not a SAD person but it still affected me marvelously.

And Montevideo was just great generally on top. Sitting on the beach until nine PM and only then going to dinner was amazing.

It's also fine as a one-off or maybe every weekend but I'm not doing that *every day*.

I've got a years-long streak but I probably use two streak freezes a month. You can't tell the distance after a week.
December 30, 2025 at 3:20 AM
I get the frustration, but Duolingo has so many ways to not break a streak (streak freezes, streak repairs, vague "do this lesson and we'll repair your streak" options that I'm really not THAT sympathetic to the kid.
