been doing a blind playthrough of ff3. i find the game's 'forced' class change mechanics annoying, so i decided to outplay them, sticking with classes that suit my characters instead

In FFII, if a spell fails, the game just says "Ineffective" and moves on. But if it's blocked by Wall, the spell's entire animation plays, followed by "Magic blocked." For Toad, this means showing the enemy turning into a little toad, and removing it from the battle. . .

About all that~

In the earliest Final Fantasy games, attack consist of multiple "hits," which multiply the attack's effectiveness. Magic works the same way, though the games don't divulge this. It's a D&D thing, I think—dice rolls and all.

In FFII, each time a character attacks, the number of hit attempts is equal to their skill level with their equipped weapon type. Magic similarly has a number of hit attempts equal to a spell's level. The Slow spell effectively subtracts its own hit successes from the hit attempts a character gets when they attack. If this would result in a negative value, the character's hit attempts are just set to 1. But a result of exactly zero is not accounted for.

The Emperor casts Slow 9, which may succeed in 1 to 9 hit attempts if it lands at all. Richard is Level 4 with bows. If Slow succeeds in exactly 4 hit attempts, Richard's attack will attempt exactly zero hits. The value apparently underflows to an impossibly high positive, though we can't be sure how many, because the indicator reads "🏹🏹 0" (so true). The animation plays 62 times, which is, more than normal. The damage dealt is 9376, a bit in excess of the Emperor's total of 1290 HP. In Final Fantasy X, that's called an "Overkill."

Now that I've played Prodigal, my new favourite character is Revulan, the feared leader of an anti-royalist shadow government who lounges on a throne and kills you with lightning if you talk to her three times whilst infiltrating her evil lair.

Never seen this character before, but Nebulon for Tōkon.

A panel from The Defenders (1972) #13, by Len Wein and Sal Buscema. The narration reads: "And when the brilliance faded, we four were no longer ALONE. Before us stood a being so AWESOME, he seemed not so much HUMAN as he did HEAVEN in the shape of a MAN. And he spoke in a voice like the ringing of a thousand crystal GONGS..."

The awesome being is a man with luxurious long white hair, bright yellow skin with a seemingly metallic sheen, and blank white eyes with a lot of eye liner around. He's wearing a navel-deep V-neck leotard that appears to contain the cosmos. Snarling beautifully, he demands: "Who summons NEBULON? Who calls THE CELESTIAL MAN from the place beyond the sky?"

I've only played Curse Crackers (For Whom the Belle Toils), but I'm eager to start Prodigal as well. I love all the little OCs who only have an idle animation and two lines, but you can sense there's more to them in the creator's mind. Endlessly fascinated by Shroomella, the mushroom witch. 🍄
