Having shown his obedience to the Father, Jesus now mirrors that obedience in his human family. In God’s providence great saints have often obeyed flawed or mediocre leaders. Saint Joseph was not mediocre: he was truly a righteous man. (8/12)

This truth, the human obedience of the Incarnate Lord, is so great and so hidden that only he can reveal it to us. As the Catechism explains: “Here Jesus lets us catch a glimpse of the mystery of his total consecration to a mission that flows from his divine sonship” (CCC 534). (7/12)

Our Lord’s ultimate answer, his greatest moment, will come when he is lifted up on the cross. As Saint Augustine writes, it is “as if that tree to which the limbs of the Dying One were affixed were the very chair of office (cathedra) from which the Master was imparting instruction.” (6/12)

Jesus could not be found outside of the Temple. He refers to his body as a temple (Jn 2:19-21), and so the finding of Jesus in the physical Temple points to finding him in his Mystical Body, the Church. (4/12)

The veil of the Temple, where the Christ Child once tarried and taught, would be torn open when he died and commended his spirit into the Father’s hands. And, after three days, the Son would again be found among the living. (3/12)

This obedience will reach its fullness at another Passover, after another journey to Jerusalem. Years later, Jesus would again be "lost" to the world for three days. (2/12)
