As a survivor myself, I was never comfortable with even the chance of putting myself in one of those situations for my job. I shouldn't have had to have those fears. Women should feel safe. Everyone should feel safe from predators. But we watch them "fail up" and get rewarded for horrendous behavior

I worked in taxonomy for years and was ALWAYS on guard. But as a marine biologist it also closed career opportunities for me. I never felt comfortable being a fisheries observer, I never felt comfortable going to remote research labs, because I heard (and believed) the accounts.

One of countless enraging examples, I've experienced. A man (30 years my senior) made very inappropriate passes at me on a research trip and for years colleagues would call to warn me before he made research trips my way.

Was he ever fired? No. It was my job to protect myself from him.

Just a reminder to young women. Your face at 18 is not your forever face. It will change. Please don't try to make it permanent for men, it won't work.
