I initially read this as ‘King Charles III’s Godfather tried and failed to assassinate Tsar Nicholas II’

If only it had done it on Halloween…

I’m kind of half surprised they didn’t ask the Queen to do it as I suspect that was the easiest thing to do. I once saw her signature on something much more trivial than this…

We went on a boat trip to Rùm when I was a kid about 35 years ago and we got to briefly see the Castle. It hasn’t changed at all.

No, but periodically I idly wonder about pre-boiling the water in the kettle (then never do it).

Hahaha I didn’t initially realise it was you! Whilst I’m here might you comment on The Lost King, Baby Cow, Coogan judgement please?

As someone who was thrown out of @newcollegeoxf.bsky.social and went to @sheffielduni.bsky.social instead
(and am convinced I had a better time and in many ways got a better education) this made me smile.

It is very beautiful, and its location certainly saved it - from the fire if nothing else. But it is far from intact - the nave is gone entirely and the east end is restoration, not original.

I don’t know what reasonably priced means in this context but any of the smaller Livery Companies in London might be good as might some of the City Churches.

Genuine OMG both for the find and the context!

Both pushy bottoms after red brick tops… (so much talking, so demanding)

Interesting new Dr Who mashup of the Autons and Weeping Angels.

The Botanic Gardens gateway and/or any view along New College/Queen’s Lane please 😃

It scared the hell out of me!

Also, not the biggest issue, but Hogwarts as realised (apparently canonically) in the films is a terrible piece of architecture - a Frankenstein’s monster of bits of real buildings (poor old Durham Cathedral) and the designer’s diseased imaginings. It’s an insult to the John Rylands to compare them.

I know you know this but, having seen how it used to be, worth emphasising that this development is also massively improving the setting of these listed buildings.

A big fan of New’s War Memorial. I think it is possible to say WWI was different to WWII and should be/can be memorialised in a different way. But the NC Memorial went up (I believe) soon after WWI so the choice was being made by those who had lived through it. Less sure about later additions.

Finally not uni related, but if I recall correctly, Members of a rival rowing club nicked the little silver rower from the top of the Thames Cup when we had it at our club for a celebration after winning it (I didn’t win it personally, I hasten to add).
