If you really want to get confused I can dip into VAVs, VRF, VRV, and rhe joy of WSHP.

If you're really fancy your unit will combine make up and exhaust, will heat/cool, and will use the exhaust air to moderate the temperature of the incoming air. All while interfacwith the Building Automation System (BAS).

That would be a DOAS or Dedicated Outdoor Air System.

Sobyou put a big fan on the building that pulls outside sir through a filter and dumps it in the building a little ways away from your exhaust system. It's common for these units to have basic heat capability as well.

Well...close

Make Up Air

Any time you have exhaust fans pulling air out of an enclosed space (think kitchens or manufacturing facilities) you need to replace that air volume or doors become tricky to open/close among other issues.

To be fair, if it weren't for the stupidity I wouldn't have as much work.
December 2, 2025 at 5:14 AM
One if these days I should start writing all these little koans in a notebook.
December 2, 2025 at 4:19 AM
Well, hold on. I take the resi onzcall duty next week and then again Dec. 29th. On-call generally is good for a story.
December 2, 2025 at 3:24 AM
Well....

I'm generally pretty willing to explain just about anything. Knowledge is just another flavor of privilege and I'd like everyone to have as much as they'd care to have.

Unit 2 had a fried wireless communication board/zone controller. Ten minutes to replace the board. An hour to get it to recognize 3 tstats, 4 remote sensors, and their associated zone dampers.

Ridiculous.

With the OEM part number and a little digging found that the company that supplied the original manufacturer with draft inducers has a current equivalent/will fit.

Johnstone had 1 in stock.

Job 2b
Same county site, no heat in the offices. 2 of 3 furnaces down on arrival. Unit 1 serving the reception area and a couple of offices needs a draft inducer motor. OEM no longer stocks that particular motor and has no superceding part number.

We might be able to thread an articulated boom lift through to it.

Maybe.

Site manager was told to call us back when they got a baby lift delivered and could shut down a sort line and a shred line.

We'll see what happens.

Job 2
Another MUA located at the county recycling center. The burner assembly and controller is 20 feet (6 m) above the floor abd because of equipment and piping installed in the last 18 months there's no way to access it via ladder or scissor lift.
December 1, 2025 at 11:43 PM
Blower is out.

It is not pretty, but it's out.

And a coworker now understands exactly how stubborn and violent I can be when the need arises.

New blower is on order from manufacturer who was also told that I would like a private meeting with their engineering department.
December 1, 2025 at 11:43 PM
Cut through the visible welds holding a blower assembly in place in a MUA. Discover there are additional welds that can only be reached from below the unit. Discover there is no way to access the unit from below without building scaffolding over a CNC mill and robotic arm.
December 1, 2025 at 11:43 PM
Oof....

Hot coffee sounds amazing right now.

I'm on a roof at 20⁰F (-6⁰C) trying to remove a blower that was never designed to be serviced or removed before the next round of snow hits in.... an hour and a half.

Gotta go!

Houses are like boats with a slightly lower chance of drowning.
