Important in public health history is @uofgshw.bsky.social's James McCune Smith, the first African American to obtain a medical degree. He had a long career as a respected medical doctor, writer, civil rights advocate & welfare campaigner for patients at Glasgow's infamous Lock hospital #BHM25
Portrait of James McCune Smith & Quote: McCune Smith’s legacy is a reminder of the importance of representation in medicine and public health. His advocacy for patient welfare and social justice remains relevant today, as certain communities continue to face barriers to accessing equitable healthcare and are underrepresented in medical leadership and research.

Good luck to all of you - and hope your surgery goes well!

The annoyance when you find a perfect present and the Etsy store (that you’ve used in the past) no longer ships to the UK. Bah!

I agree with every word Zelda Williams says. And this at the end from OpenAI makes me want to go full Ned Ludd. Creators can’t have a blanket opt-out on copyright infringement of their work and have to fill out a form appealing to OpenAI’s mercy every time? Fuck off into the sun
OpenAI told the Guardian that content owners can flag copyright infringement using a “copyright disputes form” but that individual artists or studios cannot have a blanket opt-out. Varun Shetty, OpenAI’s head of media partnerships, said: “We’ll work with rights holders to block characters from Sora at their request and respond to takedown requests.”

Yeah, they were fine! They’re not to aggressive there. I’ve heard some stories though! I’ve also been stalked a few times, your story sounds like something from Hitchcock!!

Oh I absolutely admire his relentlessness! He’s someone you’d want on your side in a crisis, but maybe not so much in the sober, detail-heavy planning stages, I think. I’ve never been as interested in Antarctic exploration though, so I’m no expert!

My hot take is that our modern view of Shackleton is very idealised. Probably not that hot a take tbh. I admire the man, but agree with you here

Tbf that was a very, very long time ago; I doubt I could stay up for 24 hours now, even if you gave me intravenous whizz and resurrected Edward Forbes for an exclusive interview.
kittyfisher.bsky.social
I think that’s healthy. Well, sort of. As long as it doesn’t end up with staying awake for 24 hours reading old letters in a language you don’t speak 😂

She does sound like fun. Last year I read an interview with some of the Rivals cast and they talked about how she invited them all over to hers for drinks, where she got them squiffier than most of them had ever been before on champagne

This is an interesting piece! Still makes me think modern Navy personnel generally have it a lot easier than those a century or two, or three, ago. At least the only lashing this drunken sailor will get will be verbal!

What do you do with a drunken sailor? The Royal Navy has a few ideas
On HMS Prince of Wales, a crew of 1,600 spend months together in stifling proximity. Maintaining morale, harmony and sanity are serious issues

I suppose so, although that’s not always a benefit! But it does force you to go further in backing up your assertions, meaning more/deeper research. So there’s that!
kittyfisher.bsky.social
Totally! As does claiming special insight or expertise when two or three years ago you didn’t know the people you’re discussing existed but now that you’re here, the day is saved! Of course they can’t know how much I know but it’s polite to not make assumptions

(also, Reform don’t have legitimate ideas or, largely, act in good faith, so I think you’re good 😁)

I’ve spent enough time biting my lip, tbh. It’s true that the older you get, the less of a shit you give. And while I (largely) don’t know what I don’t know, I do know what I do! Besides which, having been published doesn’t magically make one right about everything.

RIP Jilly Cooper. Aside from the Rutshire Chronicles, Class (which @pisc103.bsky.social bought me for my last birthday) is brilliant, razor-sharp, and so little of it has really dated.

I’m like this; recently my questioning someone’s theory being presented as fact led to a condescending reply and private message (I’m not a published author, so anything I say can be dismissed, you see, despite years of research; I’m not bitter) and I STILL couldn’t help myself.

Sad news; she was definitely a, ahem, formative influence.

See, I also have ADHD and quite enjoyed Ulysses (took ages tho), very possibly because of all the changing styles! Whereas with Middlemarch I struggled to believe people *at the time it was written* enjoyed it 😂
kittyfisher.bsky.social
I’ve never managed to get through Middlemarch, and yet I’ve read loads of 19th-century natural history and science books. I no longer intend to try, life’s too short! Good on anyone who does get through and even loves it, but it’s just never caught me.
