It is bizarre isn't it? Surely more money goes into the manufacturing of the books then just hosting a digital copy for download.

Its not across the board but say you get a mass market copy of a Brandon Sanderson book for under $10, while an ebook is $11-12. In some cases the prices are compatible.
I don't know if it's a US thing but I feel like e-books were like half the price or 3/4 the price of a physical copy in the UK.
