We've had this discussion a bunch of times in Hamilton, with the last time being a referendum where the public overwhelmingly (2 to 1) voted to reintroduce it after cookers had convinced (read: screamed at) the council to remove it behind closed doors.

Once you look at it from a "What do they gain?" perspective it becomes completely logical. They shred public services, funnel everything towards donors, then when they retire from politics, they pick up a plump director or lobbyist role in those industries.

They never expect to fix things.

We did it by.... buying 20 years ago. Single income the entire time, raised 2 kids. If we didn't have a mortgage from back then there's no way we would have made it work, and I'm on decent money.

I've never known the days where you could take an overseas holiday every few years on one income.

We bought in 2007. We're still in that house, and it's still worth well over twice what we paid. But we live there, the value is irrelevant until we sell, and if we sell we buy a different place in *the same market*. I don't care if it goes back to the same as it was in 2007. But the slumlords do.
