It’s something only gentlemen do - cigars and cognac and all that frippery. A sign of wealth and taste, and precious leisure time the likes of Izzy can only dream of. Working men have a clay pipe and a twist of shag tobacco, and they consider themselves lucky. So when Izzy kicked open the chest in the captain’s quarters of the Ranger’s latest prize, he knew the contents were for Hornigold and no one else. He finds himself standing before Hornigold’s excessively massive desk while the captain runs a cigar under his nose, savouring the aroma. The cigars look right between his fingers, Izzy thinks. Strong and substantial, just like Captain. Izzy has never been picked as Companion. Clever boys get rewards, Hornigold always says, and there’s no way a man with his cunning hasn’t noticed Izzy’s gaze roam the expanse of his broad chest. Ed and Jack get all dreamy-eyed when they talk about their turns; they say it’s like being eaten alive, whatever that means. Izzy darts a look at Hornigold’s mouth, the wet lips quirked in approval around the cigar as he pats his frock coat for his tinderbox. Perhaps Izzy isn’t the captain’s type. Too small a fish for a great marauding bear like him. Jack is tall and built like a brick wall, and Ed has those mouthwatering thighs of his. What has Izzy got but his obedience? The crack of a match. The thrilling smell of gunpowder. The rumble of Hornigold’s voice brings Izzy back to his senses. “Do you know what this is, lad?” “Fancy fags, sir.” Hornigold chuckles, a stream of fragrant smoke coiling from his nostrils. His chest swells with the first inhalation; he’s a dragon of a man, voracious and sleek. “I do enjoy your poetic turns. These are good,” he says, and extends the cigar across the desk. “Very good. Take a puff.” Izzy blinks. He’s never been asked to share the booty with a superior. He’s never dared entertain the possibility. He stares stupidly at the proffered cigar, and then up at Hornigold’s unreadable face. “Sir?” “I assume you smoke. How else did you acquire that pretty little rasp in your voice? Like a kitten.” The hard T in ‘kitten’ bares Hornigold’s incisors. Izzy blanches at the dubious compliment, and wonders if there’s any truth to Jack and Ed’s stories. “On… on occasion, sir, yes. Thank you, sir.” The cigar is heavy between his fingers, too big, almost. He must look ridiculous, raising it to his lips like it might bite him. “Do I just…?” Hornigold almost smiles. “Put it in your mouth, yes.” Christ. Izzy hopes the smoke covers the blush tingling in his cheeks. He must hesitate, because— “Take it, boy. You want it, don’t you?” Ooh. Oh, okay. Izzy knows when he’s being given an order. The end of the cigar is wet with the captain’s saliva, and Izzy feels dizzy as he lets the rolled tobacco rest on his tongue, hot and heavy and all too intimate. He wants it, alright.
