This sort of thing reminds me of a relationship that constantly tests the devotion of one of it's members to the other and kills them if they fail.
It's the something we would never tolerate in a life partner, why tolerate it in a deity who professes to love us?

More than one time. He was elated when he saw Jim, after thinking he died, and cried out “JIM” with a smile, then quickly corrected himself. Spock’s mother was human. He had emotions, he just needed to suppress them.
