Yikes, this is my first time hearing about any of this!

Glad I wasn't gonna play that one anyway, I guess.
December 12, 2025 at 8:30 AM
This all sounds so frustrating. I'm sorry.
December 12, 2025 at 8:28 AM
Oh, Breq and Tisarwat are both very interesting kinds of trans.
December 12, 2025 at 2:29 AM
Yeah, like, it's hard to know what exactly would be trans in Leckie's universe.

Certainly for Radchaai being attached to a foreign gender would be, or wanting beyond-human body stuff. But elsewhere? Maybe having a gender idea that's outside the local handful of them, but body-wise I'm uncertain.

(The non-threaded replies in this case were to avoid getting them bumped into anyone's main feed, because I don't want to be _too_ cavalier about spoilers.)
December 12, 2025 at 12:16 AM
I now interpret that as them being a new, somewhat ditzy fusion of a previous Dlique and Zeiat, whose elders have declared that Dlique is the predominant identity/name, but who isn't quite sure, and who remembers both predecessors and thus still behaves different based on which she thinks she is.
December 12, 2025 at 12:16 AM
So, they both introduce themselves as Dlique, but in Sword she adds "at least that's what they told me; I might be Zeiat", so in Mercy Breq tries the "I think you might be Zeiat" move with the second translator to introduce herself as Dlique, and it works, and gets her to behave differently, too.

I don't think this is really about strategy, though. This is just how he feels, he imagines other people feel the same way, and like most mainstream Dems he spins his personal preferences as "the pragmatic choice that real* Americans want".

* or "moderate", or "blue-collar progressive", or whatever
December 11, 2025 at 11:52 PM
I think his target demographic are the cis (and usually het) liberals who like the idea of accepting trans people (because they're so open-minded and enlightened, you see) but who find any specific policy that makes trans people's lives better squicky for unexamined reasons.

So, like, my family.
December 11, 2025 at 11:33 PM
Same. I skimmed Sword and Mercy for the relevant Presger Translator bits, and, yeah, they actually perfectly match what we learn about them in Translation State, but I never would have guessed any of it from just that view of them!
December 11, 2025 at 11:30 PM
Agreed, but I don't think we know Reet wouldn't be considered trans in our society?

But where he grew up it sounds like everyone gets to pick their gender and puberty, and given that gills and replacement legs are minor medical additions in this world, trans-as-a-category probably would be needed.
December 11, 2025 at 11:29 PM
Oh it's gotta be. I think she's has even said as much, even, though I could be misremembering?

When All Systems Red came out it was very much publicized as "if you like the Imperial Radch books, check this out", and she gave it one of the original cover quotes, after all.
December 11, 2025 at 11:26 PM
I neglected to say it earlier, but I'm also eagerly awaiting reading these thoughts.
December 11, 2025 at 10:32 PM
I mean it's not your fault for talking about it!

And I'd be happier if you're right. Just, you know, I'm a cynical old lady at this point.

Ooh, we're getting it at the Siskel Center!

I'm just so tired of known groups of bad faith actors and their beefs of any age.
December 11, 2025 at 9:22 PM
(aka making like different Fediverse instances I've seen.)

And, I dunno, maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised and they'll do better! But I've been around a while, and I'm not hopeful here. Especially given the amount of fighting I've seen after just one day (I think?) of them handing out invitations.
December 11, 2025 at 9:22 PM
Best case they make like Cohost (or various Fediverse instances) and do an orderly shutdown announced in advance.

Worse case they shut down without notice. But even worse case they get spiteful, banning strangers who annoy them, taking their friends' side in unending discourse fights, and so on.
December 11, 2025 at 9:22 PM
Which means the mods are signing up for, every day, getting yelled at in the form of "unless you ban these people [also very online trans queers] you're an abuse apologist". Hundreds of times.

How long can anyone put up with that without burning out? And when they burn out, what does that look like
December 11, 2025 at 9:22 PM
The thing is, very-online, super traumatized, lashing-out-prone trans people excited about Northsky are reading it is promising a place where they get to Feel Safe. Which means that when they don't-- from arcane discourse fights, 'cause their bad exes are there, etc.-- they're gonna yell at the mods
December 11, 2025 at 9:22 PM
I mean. There's a scale for "making a mistake". Keep a migration key around you can move again, and if you do regular backups of your data you won't lose anything.

I don't think they're bad actors. I do think they're just a few humans who will likely get overwhelmed by the task they're taking on.
