I wrote a little thing about "Fairytale of New York" and about hope for a better year, but mostly I wanted to share the rendition of the song played at Shane MacGowan's funeral in 2023 because it's so beautiful. Happy Christmas, I love ya baby. dansinker.com/posts/2025-1...

I feel the same way about music, and I think the battle is lost there – most people, I think, consider that if listening doesn’t give them what they already know they wanted, then they are not interested – for me, I want to learn more, absorb more, understand more. To be stretching

I love the Weir piece on this, and for the aurals teachers out there, it’s the best dictation exercise for the octatonic scale.
A reminder for Philadelphians that the best Lessons and Carols in town is at St. Mark’s on Locust, today at 4pm. Looks like great rep. www.saintmarksphiladelphia.org

Not crazy per-se, but I worked in the rare book room at the college library for a couple of summers. I did a project about the collecting history of JP Morgan’s nephew, who was hyperfixated on collecting every single one of the earliest printed copies of Virgil.
I think we need a mega thread of everyone's craziest archive stories.

Seeing Cast Away with my brother and one other person in the theater at 11 AM on a summer weekday
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

My aunt did design work for the Reebok NBA jerseys in the aughts and gave my family a couple of Yao Ming sample jerseys that went to the floor when I’d put them on

This is totally self-centered, but one of the reasons I’m loving the new Mountain Goats so much is that the colors and textures sound like my first attempts at serious composing in college. It has that magical, quixotic “let’s put on a show” energy.
