Not a lot of progress at the bench this week but I did manage to get all the silver leading edges done - Tamiya AS-12 in this case, which is a great analogue for the metallic grey that these areas are on the real thing (as opposed to a polished metal look).

The Welsh 777 now has its wing panels painted. I've decided to go for a bit of a hybrid scheme, cherry-picking various features of the "battleship grey" livery to suit my preferences. There are a few touch-ups to take care of, then I'll paint the natural metal bits.

Token Electra cockpit. I've also started painting the passenger seats, but am a bit stuck on what colour to paint the floor. The real thing is some kind of stripy carpet, but I think I'll just end up painting it dark grey. You'll never see most of it anyway.

Moving into the painting stage on the Welsh 777, with SMS Light Grey applied to the wings, tailplanes, and under the fuselage. More soon!

Back to the Electra now. All the interior seating has been installed, and everything bar the cockpit area has been given a coat of primer. I also removed part of left door framing at the rear lounge area, which was the main cause of the fit issues I discovered there.

The Welsh 777 gets yet another primer coat, this time switching from the dense but coarse SMS grey primer, to the much finer Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500 grey. I was hoping to start painting next, but found some blemishes to fix. And then another coat of ... primer!

Chipping away at the Electra interior. Each of the seats needs several stickers, depending on its position. Test-fitting shows that the presence of the interior components complicates getting the fuselage together quite a bit, and the nose section doesn't fit at all.

Engines and pylons for the Welsh 777 done. They're a bit lo-fi, but close enough for gubment work. Just need to add the logo stickers and a gloss coat or two, and I can put them aside while I paint the rest of the airframe.

A major milestone with the Welshmodels 777, with basic construction finished and the application of an overall primer coat. We're still a long way from paint, however, as this is just what I call the "fact-checking" layer, with lots of remedial work to come.

I've started tinkering with the One Man Model 1/72 Electra. This is a 3D-printed kit using the FDM process, and has some pretty serious layer lines. Here, the main fuselage pieces have been assembled into left and right halves, ready for work on the interior.

I knew I wasn't really that close with the wing-to-fuselage join on the Welsh 777, so I've focussed on getting a strong bond, rather than a clean one. I've reinforced both joins all the way around with black CA, and cleaned up the excess with cotton buds and debonder.

Progress on our next title, "Building The Hawker Hunter
in Worldwide Service", is going well, and we're over 250 pages in! We also have a slightly revised cover image. Projected to launch by the end of February.

Finally got the wings on the Welsh 777, but there's lots of filling and sanding ahead before the result is acceptable!

I've put together a quick'n'dirty grass mat base for the Trumpeter Emil. This is really just to prevent the undercarriage from splaying over time - and eventually collapsing altogether. And like the rest of the build, is deliberately low-effort!

For those of you wondering if it's really worth the bother to ditch the convenience of decals and paint your markings on, here's a model I built in 2008...

And with that, the Trumpeter 1/32 Bf 109E-4 in Bulgarian markings is done. My first completion for 2026, and quite possibly my best so far. Very pleased with how well it turned out for such a low-effort build. ResKit exhausts, Barracuda wheels, and a minor prop mod.

Something as simple as a slightly grubby panel line wash can really bring a model to life. For the upper surfaces, I used Tamiya's "Dark Brown" product, which is terrific. For the blue lower surfaces, I went with a certain Spanish product that was far less terrific.

I've finally been able to move on to the painting stage with the Trumpeter Emil. The canopy was masked up using Bare Metal Foil, then the frames painted in RLM 02, followed by black to provide some additional colour density. The RLM 04 is SMS. #scalemodels #histscalemodels

Creeping towards the painting stage with the Trumpeter 1/32 Bf 109E-4. Prop and rudder just dry-fitted at this stage. I need to tidy up some ghost seams on the wing leading edges and get the canopy parts done, and then I can move on to painting! Finished before 2026? #scalemodels #histscalemodels

Even more work on the Trumpeter Emil! I painted the gun troughs and surrounding area on the cowling in RLM04 to avoid an impossible masking situation later, and then installed it onto the fuselage. I also found a resin cockpit hatch out of an old True Details set, and slapped it on. #scalemodels

Making some headway on a new build project, the Trumpeter 1/32 Bf 109E-4, which I'm building for the Messerschmitt Bf 109s and Derivatives Group Build on LSP. #scalemodels #histscalemodels #bf109 #messerschmitt #trumpetermodels
