aside: the native tribes of this region often didn't use totem poles, but white folks would often bring Alaskan totem poles down and prop them up around Seattle, resulting in some heated local conversations about appropriation and their roles as repurposed symbols of domination
Are Totem Poles Northwest Tradition or Cultural Invaders?
Ubiquitous though they may be, totem poles are not native to the region surrounding what’s now called the Salish Sea.
