1794 map below explains origin of name “Gulf of Mexico”, prior to 1804 Louisiana Purchase & 1819 cession of Florida from Spain to US. All of territory in yellow was then under Spanish colonial rule. Most became México after hard-fought independence was won in 1821, until US war on Mexico (1845-48)
