As leaves are starting to drop and fall planting is underway, here's a friendly reminder to properly mulch your trees and shrubs. Leaves, sticks, wood chips, rocks, and even plants are considered mulch!

Many of our late blooming flowers are Keystone species, vital for our native pollinators this time of year in preparation for their migration and/or hibernation. This includes Asters (Symphyotrichum sp.), Goldenrods (Solidago sp.), and Sunflowers (Helianthus sp.)

With all the rain last night, we are extra muddy today. If you plan on stopping by, wear shoes you don't mind getting dirty.

I've been busy expanding the retail nursery area, bringing in more plants, updating the inventory, and generally getting ready to open up for fall.

I've mentioned to quite a few people about a possible "Pawpaw hike/hunt" this year. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that is going to happen. Both of the easy access sites that I had in mind have little to no fruit on all the trees. I suspect that is because of Chantal. If anyone knows a spot lmk

Cardinal Flower, Lobelia cardinalis, has begun to bloom!

This plant grows best in moist -wet soil in shade-full sun. I see it growing best where it gets at least some shade in the afternoon. Hummingbirds love this flower!

Just found Francis here destroying my Black Cherries in the nursery. Turns out, they're North Americas largest moth.

Had to rescue the retail area of my nursery last night. Looks like I might have lost 10-20% of my total inventory. I was able to get a lot of it to higher ground.

Just found these munching on Black Walnut, Juglans nigra. These are Butternut Woollyworm Sawfly larvae. The adults feed on nectar, pollen, honeydew, sap, and other insects. This makes them pollinators and beneficial predatory insects!

Had to rescue my spicebush seedlings from these spicebush swallowtail caterpillars yesterday. They were safely relocated to a much larger bush that grew naturally on the property.

Pawpaw seedlings FINALLY starting to push through. They're slow to start but it's worth it.

I have potted pawpaw that should be ready to sell soon, these babies should be available for bare root sale come winter.

Just added some of these beauties, Stokes Aster, Stokesia laevis. Technically, this species is a waif(exotic but not known to spread) to NC, but native to much of the SE.

You can grab one Sat 9-4. 5911 Mount Hermon Church Rd Durham.

No pesticides are used on the plants in my nursery unless absolutely necessary. So far, I only had to use Neem oil once on a non-native fly species that was defoliating my azaleas last year. That was only a dozen or so specifically treated plants rather than my entire inventory.

Want to have beautiful flowers that support native pollinators but don't have much room? A patio planter with Aromatic Aster may be for you!
A good native replacement for mums in the fall with nearly the same bloom time. Plus, it'll come back every year!
