like on a basic level those are just programs that produce an output based on inputs. often very complex ones! chess computers outplay the best humans and calculators can do maths faster. but they don't know what they're doing or think anything about it

i don't see how the language models are any different with the exception of how they are perceived, with language being seen as something that communicates consciousness. more than doing equations does anyway
