I can see why you didn't want to show us." She smiles faintly, but she hasn't let go of Orion's arm. Like it's a lifeline or something. Nerissa is blushing too, eyes anywhere but Ada's face. "Th-thanks. You look really nice too." Emmet rolls his eyes. "You look great too, Emmet," he says, pitching his voice a little higher. "It's so nice to see you, Emmet."

like no one is going to catch this very minor callback to chapter 10 of book one in [checks notes] chapter 17 of book 3 (the lie referenced here is when they're in cyfia and she says "i don't know" when he asks why the nobles don't do anything about the lower quarter. this is BARELY a parallel lol)
• In Tygea, they attempt to get a room at an inn, but the innkeeper recognizes them and raises the call for the guards. They do not fight, and instead allow themselves to be brought before the residing noble of this city. He is not much older than Nerissa herself, and seems uncertain of what to do with them. They speak to him and try to convince him to let them go about their business and not call to the capital. They are eventually successful, but he has guards watch over their rooms through the night. Later, Poseidon questions the truth of what was said, and Nerissa is honest with him about it, in a small parallel to her lie to him in OSA chapter 10.

Far from the window, Shionne quickly becomes Rinwell's favourite thing to observe around here. She does everything with a sort of deliberate awareness, except when she doesn't. In the kitchen, helping with dinner, or late at night when Rinwell is sat in front of the fire reading aloud to pass the time for them both until they grow tired. Outside, picking the year's final blossoms before frost inevitably creeps up on them under autumn's breath, insidious killer that it is. She lets Rinwell braid them into her hair and laughs about it, like life isn't so complicated at all. When she plucks them out, she tucks one behind Rinwell's ear, and Rinwell presses it into a book later, after Shionne has already gone to bed. She doesn't know why, but she thinks it is special. That she should keep it forever. That she should let it outlive her. One night, Rinwell stays up to listen as the rain pitter-patters against the roof. It's such an unusual noise, and she still doesn't know how she feels about it. It disrupts her sleep, but it doesn't alarm her. Just...draws her attention. Beautiful things often do, but so do frightening ones. Sometimes, the difference isn't so clear-cut. She rises when she hears movement on the other side of the cottage. By the time Shionne apparently gives up on sleep and tiptoes out to the kitchen, Rinwell has already made the hot cocoa. There's a brief flicker of surprise, but it melts into a rueful smile. "It's late," is all she says. "Yeah," Rinwell agrees. "Can't sleep?" A beat of silence, while she slides into her regular seat and pulls the waiting mug closer to her. Another, in which she takes a contemplative sip. And then it slams down against the table; the reverbrations drown out the rain.
