Actually, although not as good as the book (has a great book ever been equaled or surpassed by a movie based on it?), I have to admit that the Visconti movie (with Burt Lancaster) is very good. But I don't recommend watching it so soon after the book.

One of my favorite books! The movie with Burt Lancaster is pretty good, but the book is much better. (Among other things, the setting of the movie is more grandiose.) I'm glad you read the book first. Not interested in the Netflix version--I suspect it's terrible.

Good episode. Like many, I had a Nietzsche phase. In the end, though, Schopenhauer’s emphasis on compassion for our fellow sentient beings speaks more to me. Apocryphal as it may be, I’m fond of the Nietzsche who embraced that poor horse—he showed solidarity with another suffering being.

An absurd nightmare. And yet it is real.

Yes, even before I bought the book, I remember you made that clear in your conversation with Ricardo (@thedissenteryt.bsky.social). It was just a self-indulgent remark on my part.

I remember that interview!Heard it shortly after it came out and because of it was compelled to read Gaita's powerfully moving "Romulus, My Father".

I enjoy the occasional biography, so first I'll read your book (which I've already ordered.)

Enjoyed very much the Schopenhauer binge I had yesterday and today. Bather Woods and Norberg were excellent. Perhaps it's time for me to dig out the Schopenhauer I read years ago.

You're a good biologist.

I remember that one. Owen Flanagan is always very good.
