Read the two manga short stories, which this is based on and while they're absolutely wonderful, it's truly exceptional what Sho Miyake did with them. Stuff like this is the reason why you shouldn't just adapt stuff 1:1. Knowing the original, the movie, with all its changes, just gets greater.
