Yeah, centralisation is a local language's worst enemy. Here they've tried again and again, and some did die off. But basque country has always been relatively remote, so that's why even the Romans did not kill off the language.

The french did a very thorough job killing off local languages sadly. Spain luckily has always been a mess so it could be worse.
